“Photo upload error” — OCI Services
The OCI portal's upload error rarely means anything is wrong with how the photo looks — the file itself is breaking one of the portal's unusually tight rules. Here's each rule it enforces, and the tool below tests your photo against all of them.

Each cause, and how to fix it
File outside 10–200KB
- Why it fails
- The portal caps photos at 200KB — a fraction of what any phone produces — and also refuses files under 10KB.
- The fix
- Compress into the band while keeping the face sharp; the render targets the top of the band for quality.
Not a square
- Why it fails
- OCI requires equal width and height, between 200×200 and 900×900 px. Standard photos are rectangles and fail instantly.
- The fix
- Crop to a centered square around the face — the tool computes the crop from your face position.
Background wrong — OCI wants light colour, NOT white
- Why it fails
- Unusually, the OCI FAQ explicitly requires a plain light-coloured background and says not white — so a standard white visa photo fails here.
- The fix
- Replace the background with a uniform light grey in the render — this tool applies OCI's non-white rule automatically.
Wrong file type or a corrupted JPEG
- Why it fails
- HEIC (iPhone default), PNG and renamed files fail — the portal reads the actual bytes, not the extension.
- The fix
- Export a genuine baseline JPEG — the tool always outputs one.
Frequently asked questions
Yes — the India e-visa portal shares the square requirement, though its file window is looser (10KB–1MB). If OCI accepts your photo, the e-visa portal will too.
