Not a 600–1200 px square
- Why it fails
- The DS-160 checker requires a perfect square between 600×600 and 1200×1200 px. Phone photos are rectangles, and a 599 px side fails.
- The fix
- Crop to a centered square and resize into the accepted range — the tool below renders the safe 600×600 baseline automatically.
File is over 240KB
- Why it fails
- Modern phone cameras produce 2–8MB files; the portal caps uploads at 240KB and refuses larger ones outright.
- The fix
- Compress the JPEG below 240KB without visible quality loss — done automatically in the render.
Head ratio outside 50–69%
- Why it fails
- Your head (chin to top of hair) must fill 50–69% of the frame height. Selfies shot too close or too far both land outside the band.
- The fix
- Re-crop so the head lands mid-band (~60%). The tool measures your face and crops to spec.
Background isn't white
- Why it fails
- Cream walls, shadows, or gradients all read as non-white to the checker even when they look white to you.
- The fix
- Replace the background with pure white — the paid render does this cleanly around hair edges.
